In the Mix of Vancouver’s Kicks
It is a rare occurrence for one to attend and witness an event that carries the magnitude as awe-inspiring the Olympic Games, but Angela Graves, her husband and her two children, ages 11 and 15, were few of the lucky spectators who were able to make the trip from their home in Renton, Washington to Vancouver to view such an extraordinary display of athletic competition.

Of all of the impressive performances at the Winter Olympics, Switzerland goalie Jonas Hiller proved just how good a player he is going to be for the Anaheim Ducks as he came ever so close to guiding the minnows to an unlikely semi-final place.

There have been very few sports organizations that seem to place themselves in positions that make their fans happy. Today, a decision the NHL made quite some time ago, manifested into something special. Luck, a large stage, and superior talent has more than likely added to the fan-ship of the league.

The Americans went on to win the gold medal in hockey that year - something that hasn't happened since, but don't expect any miracles next month at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. No, the United States still isn't favored to win a gold medal in hockey. In that respect the Americans remain underdogs. But with a roster stacked with young talent, they certainly are a medal candidate - one that the powerhouses from Canada, Russia and Sweden can't afford to overlook. "A little bit different situation [than 1980] in my opinion," said United States team captain Jamie Langenbrunner, a forward with the NHL's New Jersey Devils. "As much as Canada deserves all the credit that they're getting for the players they have, the 23 players named to the [United States] team play in the same league as those guys and we feel quite comfortable playing against them on a nightly basis. We feel we belong on the same ice."

Did I say love? My bad!
A huge fight that stopped a KHL Championship game just after four minutes of play has led to a criminal investigation being launched into the reasons behind the major brawl at the game between Vityaz Chekhov and Avangard Omsk on January 9th.

At the Winter Classic on January 1, Team USA was unveiled after a thrilling game between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park. Burke decided to go with youth to try and capture the Gold.

The Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament began Saturday night in two separate European states.
In the opening bout of the tournament, “King” Arthur Abraham brutally knocked out Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor with six seconds remaining in the 12th round at O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany.

I understand that Shaquille O'neal is a man that transcends just the NBA, but watching him attempt to play against other athletes in their own sport is extremely difficult to swallow. Watching Shaq attempt to swing a bat was like watching a baby giraffe trying to walk. It was hard to watch yet I could not take my eyes off of it, like a car accident. The 7'1" O'neill attempted to out-slug Albert Pujols, out-spike beach volleyball stars Misty May and Kerri Walsh, and out-throw Ben Roethlisberger, needless to say he could not out-do anybody at anything. The show is a half hour too long and the hosts are extremely annoying. The most important part of the show, the actual competition, takes place in the last fifteen minutles of the show making the first 45 minutes irrelevant. Here are some short examples of the show from Youtube:

I hope that it's not part two for the San Antonio Spurs. Manu Ginobili got hurt last summer playing for Argentina in the olympics and at the time, contract negotiations between Ginobili and the spurs were underway. Now, those talks have stalled, as the spurs have taken a cautious approach regarding his contract, meaning no extention up to this point!. If Ginobili doesn't come out this year and have one his best, he stands to lose millions.

So as I said, the 100m was a big deal. But, not as big as expected, since Bolt did not run with Powell and Gay. Despite his absence, Gay still gave people something to talk about. He ran a 9.79 that was just barely over the legal limit. What looked close, wasn't even close at all. The last twenty meters or so Gay was the clear victor, and was obviously onto something special. Another American, Darvis Patton came in second with a 9.95. Followed by Asafa powell, who faded at the end.

Tomorrow is going to preview some of the best competition in the 100 meter dash before the World Championships in Berlin. Triple Olympic gold medallists Usain Bolt, former world record holder Asafa Powell, and the triple world champion Tyson Gay are the elites of a field that all run under ten seconds. It looks as though that this race is as important, if not more than the World Championships themselves. With such a field of runners, there will be no surprise to see a new world record.

Tisdale leaves a lasting legacy
In amongst all the NBA play-off heroics of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant’s head-to-head clashes with Carmelo Anthony, the NBA lost one of its true characters last week with the sad passing of Wayman Tisdale from cancer at the age of only 44.

This is it! My favourite time of year. The time of year where I make sure to clear my schedule, study the brackets, load the fridge with munchies and beverages and basically put my life on pause for the duration of arguably the greatest tournament in all of sports (sorry Olympics, World Cup). By the end of it, my eyes feel like their going to pop out of my head from over use and fresh air becomes a distant fading memory but it's totally worth it.

Everyone reading this entry has done something in their past they are not proud of, and I mean each and every one of you.
Whether you stole a pack of gum from a convenience store or hit a parked car without leaving a note, you felt guilty the next day. But you learned from your mistakes, and hopefully you earned the forgiveness of those you hurt.

The Word Baseball Classic. A classic game of baseball that features sixteen countries to exhibit their talents to the world. It is a tournament where players go out and represent their country and our proud to be doing so. It is the bragging rights for the winner to proclaim they are the best baseball nation in the world. Famous baseball players around the world will be playing for their countries. This list includes baseball greats such as Derek Jeter, Miguel Cabrera, Grady Sizemore, Carlos Zambrano, Alex Rodriguez, Ichiro Suzuki, and many more stars to display their talents to the world. Are you excited? Are you ready to root for your country and hope they bring home they big cheese? Are you really that excited? I say, who cares. The World Baseball Classic means nothing. I mean, what is the point of it. Sure, it is a way for us to see talent around other countries and we can see who will be the next Albert Pujols. But why do we need this. In the United States, our nation could care less if we win or lose, even though it is embarrassing for us to lose after it is called "America's Pastime." United States has many more important things going on in the sports world besides the WBC. This might mean a lot to other neighboring nations because it is a way for showing their pride and a way of showing their talent to the world. They do not have the World Series like the United States. This is their World Series and their gold medal in the Olympics. Japan went crazy when they won the first WBC title. It was an honor for them to win it and they really appreciated what they have accomplished. That will not be the same in the United States.

With the NHL, that’s National Hockey League, season well underway now might be an appropriate time to give the league and its’ games a few props. Growing up in central North Carolina in the seventies and eighties with the closest ice rink 90 long miles away, I really did not know much about hockey other than knowing it was played on ice with some sort of stick. Of course for most people my generation that all changed with the now very familiar and publicized performance of Team USA at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics. Still the magnitude, or should I say miracle, of that event did not pay long lasting dividends for future interest in the sport in southern states.

This game would have been the first time Greg Oden got to play against Yao Ming. I remember watching Ming and Shaq battle head to head a couple of times during Mings rookie season. Instead, Greg will watch from the bench and prepare for Saturdays game against the Timberwolves and the rest of us will get our first look at this seasons version of the Houston Rockets and Center Yao Ming. Ming is leading the league in minutes played by centers, and appears fully recovered from last seasons stress fracture and his Chinas poor showing in the Olympics.

Game Preview of Portland at Utah 11/5
On the road vs the Utah Jazz. A hard nosed veteran team that won 54 games last season and a division title. The Jazz beat us twice in preseason. But in both games a number of our frontline players sat the game out. The second time we did this there were rumors that Nate didn't want to show Jerry Sloan his full bag of tricks. We'll see. Everyone should be available for this game against the Jazz.

The Portland Trail Blazers finally kicked off their 2008-2009 NBA season on Tuesday. I, along with most of the rest of the city, have been waiting for this moment all summer long. And the Blazers proceeded to go out and lay an egg in the first half and lose by 20 to the reigning Western Conference champs. After the game, Nate McMillan might have told his team to completely forget about what just happened.

One of the most important moves by the 49ers in the past 6 years was made before this weekend's game vs Seattle. The firing of Mike Nolan came just one day after another disappointing loss, this time to the New York Giants. The Nolan era will not be remembered for much, except for the fact that the team is in better shape now than when he was first hired. The 18 wins, bad personnel decisions via free agency and the draft, and horrible decisions during games on Sundays. Those factors alone will make anyone wish to forget the 4 years of futility. "The decision was difficult, because Mike has been both a friend and a valued coach of our team," said Scott McCloughan, who was hired by Nolan but was promoted to general manager last year. "My first obligation is to do what is in the best interest of our fans and the entire 49ers organization."

First off, I am a Filipino, proud and grateful to be born and raised in the Philippines.
We are one of the most basketball-crazed countries. If you look thru the history books of basketball, the Philippines is included in the very first tournament of basketball in the Olympics. The Philippines is the most dominating country in basketball in all of Southeast Asia and was once one of the basketball powerhouses in all of Asia. Filipinos love basketball more than any other sport in the world. Even soccer's not as appreciated here.

Well it really sucks that Wakefield is on the DL, and with Buchholz struggling, the Sox rotation is really only three men deep right now. Colon is doing his rehab in Pawtucket, and is not quite ready to come back to Boston yet. Papi's wrist problems kept him out of the game today, but the Red Sox were able to come out on top of the White Sox 5-1 without him. Hopefully his wrist won't be too serious of a problem for the remainder of the season.

First the U.S. loses a bunch of nobodies to foreign teams, now some of our prized NBA players are saying they'd consider offers from International teams.
My God, the American team is supposed to be playing for the Gold, and LeBron and Kobe are talking about possible lucrative deals to play elsewhere. This might just be more inappropriate than showing George Bush on television after each American victory.

I've batted this back and forth and have decided NOT to blog about the Olympics. It comes after much thought and prayer. For me, when I see how Christians and other religious faiths are being treated and remember the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, I really feel the world should have nothing to do with China until its government changes.

The time has finally come to accept the fact that the United States doesn't play the world's best basketball anymore.
The Americans struggled in the final two games of their pre-Olympic tour, breaking away late to beat Russia and holding off Australia, but the damage has been done to their collective psyche and invincible reputation. Predictions that the U.S. will win the gold medal, long considered a definite as long as basketball's birthplace fielded a team, are laughable. The Americans will be lucky to even win a medal the way that they currently play the game.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics is upon us and decorated swimmer Michael Phelps is not the only recognizable American hoping to return home with gold. There are twelve other American athletes, the men who comprise Team USA Basketball, who this time travel to China with a chip on their shoulders, for they are no longer considered the best in their sport. On August 10th, Team USA Basketball officially begins their quest for Olympic gold, a shot at redemption and the right to once again proclaim that America’s brand of basketball is the best on the planet.

Last Sunday, in my Los Angeles Times, there was an article about American athletes (and by American athletes I mean athletes who were born and raised here) who are competing for Mexico in the upcoming Olympics. The article was kind of an icing on the cake confirmation for me that, todays' first and second-generation Americans, are leading the way in the demise of our great country. What's even more saddening for me is that when I share this story with other Americans, the common response I've gotten is usually something along the lines of, "They just want to compete in the Olympics" or "What's the big deal? They just want to play". Who cares? They just want to swim, run and jump, right? It doesn't matter that they're Americans swimming, running and jumping for another nation, does it? Is this the prevailing mentality across America? Call me old-fashioned, it ain't right.

It was as recent as 2004 where Roger Clemens was at top of his game. It was his first year in the National League while playing for the Houston Astros. He ended up going 18-4 and eventually went on to win the National League Cy Young Award. How quickly can things can fall from grace. In December 13, 2007, Clemens name was listed in the Mitchell Report, which alleged that he had used steroids and HGH during the 1998-2001 seasons. Ever since those allegations, Clemens has been saying he was falsely accused with his lawyer Rusty Hardin backing him up. Even under oath in front of federal investigators and the Supreme Court, he kept to his story that he never did take HGH or steroids. What a horrible decision that would later be for him.

The 35-17 Lakers continued to roll with a blow-out of the T-Wolves Wednesday, with the line-up doing their jobs superbly.
What's becoming a bit more worrisome for the Lakers Finals quest than Bynum's knee rehab, Shaq rumbling for Phoenix, or whether Dallas can salvage the Jason Kidd trade debacle, however, is the diagnosis on Kobe's injured right pinky.

If you read this piece by ignoring the first paragraph and skipping directly to the second, you’d see how I originally envisioned it: as an indictment of our legal system, highlighting the disparity between punishments for Marion Jones and Scooter Libby. However, between conceiving of the idea this morning and gathering my thoughts to begin writing, I heard ESPN’s J.A. Adande tackle this very issue on the Steve Mason show. I was frustrated that I was beaten to the punch, but honored that the well-spoken and thoughtful J.A. shared my sentiment. Kudos, Mr. Adande for a very articulate, heart-felt breakdown of why Marion Jones’ six month prison sentence is unfair. But here’s my take.
